There’s a reason why Modern Family swept the 2011 Emmy Awards (copping the Outstanding Comedy Series statuette for the second year in a row) and won a 2012 Golden Globe and SAG Award: the show is a universal ode to big, messy families and the everyday things that happen to them (and us!). MF seemed near-perfect when it premiered in September ’09, but now—with more of a focus on the kids (i.e., “new Lily” plus a quartet of knowing teens who rival the eighties Cosby Show kids)—it reigns supreme. Or as USA Today so boldly proclaims, “Not since Frasier has a sitcom offered such an ideal blend of heart and smarts, or proven itself so effortlessly adept at so many comic variations, from subtle wordplay to big-laugh slapstick to everything in between.”
