The Paley Museum Salutes Hispanic Achievements in Television
This multimedia exhibition launches during Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrates the contributions of legendary icons, influential television programs, and the evolution of Hispanic representation from the past to present.
We are thankful to Verizon for their continued support in shining a light on diverse voices in media.
Our salute tracks formative milestones across five genres: Drama & Telenovelas, Comedy, News & Talk, Sports, and Music & Variety, and includes a special look at the role of Hispanic representation in Children’s Programming.
• Get an up-close, in-person look at original costumes, scripts, and memorabilia from Sesame Street, La Reina del Sur, George Lopez's new show, and more!
• After a visit to the exhibition, enjoy a special screening schedule of curated programs or visit our library to enjoy our vast archive of programming that features decades of Hispanic TV and the careers of many of its most accomplished figures.
• The exhibition also offers arts & crafts and daily screenings of family programming, including episodes featuring some of television's most beloved Hispanic characters including Dora the Explorer, Santiago of the Seas, and Maya & Miguel.

The Ed Wynn Show: “Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball”
This rare 1949 television appearance marked the first time TV’s First Couple appeared on the small screen before their legendary show I Love Lucy hit the airwaves two years later. In the episode, Desi Arnaz sings, cracks jokes, and speaks Spanish in front of a national audience—which given the time, would have been infrequently heard on U.S. TV broadcasts. (1949; CBS)

The first broadcast television drama series featuring a predominantly Latino cast premiered just twenty years ago on PBS. Helmed by acclaimed Chicano director Gregory Nava (El Norte, Selena), the show follows the Gonzalez family in Los Angeles through moments of crisis and transitions, and the all-star cast includes Edward James Olmos, Sônia Braga, Esai Morales, Michael Peña, Constance Marie, and Raquel Welch. As one of the few comedies to feature a Hispanic family, George Lopez’s self-titled ABC sitcom drew inspiration from his standup routines and experiences growing up and living in Los Angeles. The pilot, which is also celebrating its twentieth anniversary, introduces many of the show’s memorable characters. (2002; ABC)

In this episode, Jimmy Smits makes his debut as Bobby Simone on the long-running ABC drama series. Smits would earn many awards and nominations throughout his tenure on the show, including the historic distinction of becoming the first Hispanic actor to be nominated for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series in 1995. Based on journalistic research and testimonies by the people closest to María Félix during her lifetime, including Luis Martínez de Anda, her right-hand man and universal heir, the TelevisaUnivision series narrates the life of this iconic actress from her early days to her rise to fame and more.
