A holistic detective who doesn’t really detect . . . or find clues . . . or has never really solved a case. OK, so he’s a crazy person who’s insinuated himself into the life of a man who literally has absolutely nothing left to lose. Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) is having perhaps the worst day of his life—his drug-dealing landlord has trashed his car, and he’s discovered the body of a murdered millionaire in the penthouse of the hotel where he works as a bellhop. All of this leads to a peculiar chain of events that makes him a suspect . . . and gets him sacked from his job. Enter Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), the fast-talking, eccentric detective hired to investigate the case. Dirk, whose philosophy hinges on the interconnectedness of all things, wholly believes he and Todd are destined to untangle the mystery together, and tries his hardest to convince Todd to embrace the madness, because let’s face it, what else has he got going on? Adapted from the popular novels by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is the imaginative new eight-part original series from BBC America. The Paley Center is delighted to present a premiere screening followed by a conversation with members of the cast and creative team.
