In honor of the annual broadcast of the Tony Awards, the Paley Center is happy to partner with Opera Index and the 2013 Tony Awards Film Series to screen two programs from our collection: the 1971 Tony Awards broadcast and the 1967 Armstrong Circle Theatre version of Carousel with Robert Goulet.

Special Screening: 1971 Tony Awards

12:30 pm

The 25th Annual Tony Awards ceremony (held on March 28, 1971) was a first-class affair from start to finish. Produced by the late, great showman Alexander Cohen (with a witty, literate script by Cohen’s wife, Hildy Parks), it paid tribute to every show that had won the Best Musical Tony Award during the previous quarter-century. The star-studded list of participants who re-created their original roles included Zero Mostel (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Fiddler on the Roof), Alfred Drake (Kiss Me, Kate and Kismet), Robert Preston (The Music Man), Gwen Verdon (Can-Can, Damn Yankees, and Redhead), and Carol Channing (Hello, Dolly!). The program was hosted by Lauren Bacall, Anthony Quinn, Angela Lansbury, and Anthony Quayle.

The 2013 Tony Awards, which are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall, on the CBS television network on Sunday, June 9, 2013 (8:00 to 11:00 pm ET).

Armstrong Circle Theatre: Carousel

3:00 pm

In Person:
Bambi Linn
, Dancer (“Louise” in the original Broadway cast of Carousel)
Gemze de Lappe, Dancer
Mary Grover, “Julie Jordan”
Moderator: Ted Chapin

The Paley Center will screen the two-hour Armstrong Circle Theatre adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Carousel, which was broadcast in color on May 7, 1967, on ABC-TV. The special starred Robert Goulet as Billy Bigelow, Mary Grover as Julie Jordan, Marlyn Mason as Carrie, Patricia Neway as Nettie, Jack DeLon as Mr. Snow, and Pernell Roberts as Jigger, with famed veteran Charlie Ruggles as the Starkeeper.

Following the screening there will be a discussion with actress Mary Grover and dancers Bambi Linn (“Louise” in the original Broadway production of Carousel) and Gemze de Lappe, who both had a long association with the choreographer Agnes de Mille—and rare 1945 film footage of Ms. Linn dancing Carousel’s Act II “Ballet” will be shown.

Copresented with Opera Index and the 2013 Tony Awards Film Series.
