The New York Philharmonic Archives has recently remastered thirteen programs during the early years of Leonard Bernstein’s tenure as Music Director; these shows aired nationally once and have been unavailable to the public ever since. This special screening features an exemplary program, together with an outtake recorded during the Philharmonic’s 1961 Japan tour and never broadcast in its entirety.

Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic: JAPAN

The world premiere of this outtake: Seiji Ozawa, newly appointed assistant conductor (age 26), leads the New York Philharmonic in a 1961 performance of Mayuzumi's Bacchanale. (14 minutes)

Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic: BERLIN

For a student audience in Berlin, shortly before construction of the Berlin Wall, Leonard Bernstein examines the distinguishing qualities of German music and, from the piano, conducts the New York Philharmonic in a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto. No. 1 in C Major. Because this concert fell on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Bernstein dedicates the performance with an ancient prayer for peace. (1960, 54 minutes, with Japanese subtitles)
