AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS, THE 25TH ANNUAL (TV)

Summary

This awards presentation program, hosted by Drew Carey, honors the most popular musical achievements of 1997 in the following categories: pop/rock, country, soul/r&b, adult contemporary, rap/hip-hop, alternative music, soundtrack, and an award of merit. In commemoration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the American Music Awards, great moments and performances from the show's history are interspersed throughout the program. Highlights include the following: Janet Jackson performs "Together Again"; Reba McEntire wins Favorite Female Country Artist; Boyz II Men wins Favorite Soul/R&B Band, Duo, or Group; Matchbox 20 performs music from their album, "Yourself or Someone Like You"; "Men in Black" wins Favorite Soundtrack; Trisha Yearwood performs "How Do I Live"; Alabama wins Favorite Country Band, Duo, or Group; the Spice Girls perform "Too Much" via satellite; Erykah Badu wins Favorite New Soul/R&B artist; Enrique Iglesias performs "Lluvia Cae"; the Spice Girls win Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, or Group as well as Favorite New Pop/Rock Artist; Puff Daddy and Mase perform a medley of "Mo Money MÕ Problems" and "It's All About the Benjamins"; Julio Iglesias wins Favorite Latin Music Artist; Bush wins Favorite Alternative artist; Bone Thugs-n-Harmony wins Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist; Reba McEntire sings "What If"; Drew Carey joins Weird Al Yankovic and Those Darn Accordions in a medley of hits from twenty-five years of the American Music Awards; Mary J. Blige's "Share My World" wins Favorite Soul/R&B Album; Mariah Carey perfoms "Close My Eyes" via satellite; George Strait's "Carrying Your Love With Me" wins for Favorite Country Album; and Boyz II Men perform "A Song for Mama."

Tony Bennett presents the Award of Merit to Frank Sinatra, followed by a clip reel covering Sinatra's long music and film career; Nancy Sinatra accepts on his behalf; Michael Bolton sings the aria "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's "Turandot"; Babyface wins Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist as well as Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist; the Spice Girls' "Spice" wins Favorite Pop/Rock Album; George Strait wins Favorite Country Male Artist; Mary J. Blige and George Benson perform "Seven Days"; Elton John wins Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist; Lee Ann Womack wins Favorite New Country Artist; Garth Brooks performs "Rollin'"; and Celine Dion wins Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist.
