LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN: CHRISTMAS WITH THE LETTERMANS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late night talk/variety programs hosted by David Letterman. In this program, Letterman spoofs the genre of family Christmas specials, with a cast of players who are touted as his "real" family members: wife Audrey Daniels Letterman, their children Hank, Terry, Melissa, and Kyle, and Dave's brother, Daryl. Special guest stars include Pat Boone; comedian Brother Theodore, who spars verbally with Letterman in an interview; and "The Doodletown Pipers." As the program opens, the Doodletown Pipers and the Letterman "family" minus David sing "It Smells Like Christmas" with a cameo appearance by Boone. Letterman introduces his "family" and shares several family traditions with the audience, including ongoing coverage of the youngest son, Kyle, as he wanders around New York City searching for a Christmas tree more than 7 feet tall, and Letterman singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Letterman interviews Boone, who shares some anecdotes about his family and talks about the last time he worked with Letterman. A clip of the upcoming special "Pat Boone's Old Fashioned Christmas" is shown. Boone asks Letterman what Christmas means to him, which prompts a comic interlude in which Letterman is shown leaving his guest to wander around the backstage of his set and ponder the question. Includes a one-minute promo for NBC Saturday morning programming, sung by the Chipmunks (cartoon characters).
