CIVIL WAR, THE, EPISODE 4: 1863: SIMPLY MURDER (TV)

Summary

The fourth episode of this nine-part documentary about the American Civil War, narrated by David McCullough. Subtitles include "Northern Lights," "Oh! Be Joyful," "The Kingdom of Jones," "Under the Shade of the Trees," and "A Dust-Covered Man." Those appearing include writer Shelby Foote and historians Barbara Fields and Stephen B. Oates. Events covered include the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and the death of Stonewall Jackson. The effects of the Emancipation Proclamation are considered, including its true meaning for the eventual freedom of blacks, Frederick Douglass' attempts to ensure freed blacks the right to serve in battle, which is not part of the Proclamation, and the resulting anti-war sentiment among certain Northerners, which spawn secret societies whose members are dubbed "Copperheads." The struggle to find competent Union army leadership continues as the Army of the Potomac is led first by Ambrose E. Burnside, and then by Joseph Hooker. The Union occupation of Clarksville, Tennessee, also continues. The growing instability of the Confederacy is examined, with an uprising in Jones County, Mississippi; the Bread Riots in Richmond; high military casualties, forcing the army to buy slaves to fight; and the desertion of plantation owners moving away with their slaves. Topics also include low soldier morale, high desertion rates, poor weather, diseases, and the food, drink, and popular music preferences of both armies. A the program concludes, Ulysses S. Grant is stalled outside the city in his siege on Vicksburg, and Robert E. Lee moves his men north in an attempt to divert Grant and his men from their position.
