FRONTLINE/THE AIDS QUARTERLY: A SPECIAL REPORT: BORN IN AFRICA (TV)
Summary
This special report presented by "Frontline" and "The AIDS Quarterly," features the story of Philly Bongoley Lutaaya, a celebrated singer/musician from Uganda, who embarked on a nationwide tour in the effort to educate his fellow citizens about AIDS. In 1984 Lutaaya left Uganda for political reasons and went into exile in Sweden. When he returned to his homeland in 1988, he was embraced as a national hero. One year later, he became the first prominent African to publicy announce he had AIDS. This report chronicles Lutaaya's travels throughout his country, performing and visiting schools, villages, churches, and mosques, to publicize the need for AIDS preventive measures. Those who are interviewed or appear in clips include A.K. Lutaaya; Lutaaya's brother; Michael Daugherty, manager; Alex Mukulu, his friend; Adjoa Amana of the World Health Organization; Dr. Ronald Batta, minister of state for Health (Uganda); Prime Minister Samson Kisekka of Uganda; Justine Lutaaya, his mother; Dr. Elly Katabira, senior and lecturer for the department of medicine at Makerere University; and De De Majoro, a musician.
