ST. ELSEWHERE: IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH (TV)
Summary
One in this medical drama series revolving around the staff of St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In this episode, Dr. Victor Ehrlich is having rehearsals for his upcoming marriage to Roberta. Dr. Mark Craig has graciously offered the use of his house for the ceremony and party. Dr. Phil Chandler decides to run in the Boston Marathon in the winter because he didn't finish the last time he tried. Charlie Halloran, the coach of many Olympic rowing teams, gets rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pains and a high fever. After some tests, it is revealed he has a malignant tumor in his back. At the Craig household, the ceremony is ready to begin but Roberta's mother decides to inform her of a little secret. After hearing that her mother never really loved her father, Roberta cancels the wedding and leaves Victor at the altar. While Phil is running the marathon route, a car tries to run him over, a dog begins to follow him for a good distance, and a woman comes up beside him to run the toughest part of the route. Charlie's daughter, Joan, learns of her father's legacy and tries desperately to have the racing shell shipped down from Canada so Charlie can get a look at it. With the help of her friends at the rowing club, the shell arrives at the hospital and Charlie can't believe his eyes. With the wedding plans on hold, the party begins to eat the food and they all come down with food poisoning. After some terse words to Roberta from Mark's mother-in-law, the ceremony is finally ready to begin except that all the guests and the priest have been taken to St. Eligius to treat the food poisoning. Dr. Wayne Fiscus is waiting for Phil so they can go to the ceremony together but the ceremony actually comes to Wayne who is on call at the hospital. Charlie suffers a cerebral hemorrhage and slips into a coma. Dr. Donald Westphall informs the family that Charlie is on a respirator and will be brain dead if he wakes up. The decision is made to pull the plug and Joan is devastated by the loss of her father. Commercials deleted.
