TROUBLE IN TAHITI (TV)

Summary

One in this series of opera performances. Composed expressly for television by Leonard Bernstein, this one-act, English-language opera uses bittersweet satire to portray domestic strife in the suburbs. The opera chronicles a day in the life of Dinah (Williams) and Sam (Patrick), who have been struggling to maintain their foundering marriage. As the opera begins, the couple bickers during breakfast. In subsequent scenes, their private musings and fantasies are revealed in various settings -- their home, Sam's office and gym, Dinah's beauty salon, and her psychiatrist's office. Animation and graphics are used to bridge scene changes, with ironically upbeat accompaniment by an off-camera singing trio.
