MUSEUM OF BROADCASTING SEMINAR SERIES, THE: THE MANY WORLDS OF CAROL BURNETT, SEMINAR NO. 1 {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio, then known as The Museum of Broadcasting. This session features comedienne and actress Carol Burnett. In conjunction with the exhibit "The Many Worlds of Carol Burnett," the seminar presents some of Burnett's work, and Burnett answers audience questions. Museum president Robert M. Batscha opens the seminar by introducing a screening, highlighting Burnett's wide scope in television performance. Clips from her performances on "The Garry Moore Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show," her many television specials, and "The Carol Burnett Show" are included. Next, Batscha introduces Burnett, who immediately begins taking questions from the audience.

Topics discussed include: Burnett's future plans, including a possible special with Julie Andrews, a possible stage appearance, and a book she is writing with her daughter; her training at UCLA and her discovery that she had comic talent; her early work on the "Garry Moore Show"; and her professional relationships with fellow "Carol Burnett Show" regulars Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. Questions from the audience next lead Burnett to discuss her start in show business. She discusses being cast in her breakthrough role in the musical "Once Upon a Mattress" and the impetus behind the "Rehearsal Club Revue," the small production put on by the New York hotel for female performers in which she lived at the start of her career. She laughingly explains that she began pulling on her ear when she first performed on "The Paul Winchell-Jerry Mahoney Show," as a way of saying hello to her grandmother. Next, Burnett discusses her job at the Blue Angel club and highlights the importance of a colleague and friend, writer Ken Welch, to her career. Burnett also discusses some of her favorite characters and segments from "The Carol Burnett Show," crediting designer Bob Mackie with making many of them come alive. Burnett next asserts that although she is critical of some of her work she feels all needs to be accessible through the museum. Before Batscha closes the seminar, Burnett performs her trademark Tarzan yell.
