JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {THE HONEYMOONERS: TRIP TO EUROPE: WHEN IN ROME} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. In this special series of musical-comedy sketches based on "The Honeymooners," bus driver Ralph Kramden, his wife, Alice, and their friends Ed and Trixie Norton have won a trip around the world in a contest held by the Flakey Wakey cereal company. In this sketch, the world travelers arrive in Rome, and Alice befriends a young Italian boy named Tony, who acts as her tour guide and develops a crush on her. When Ralph overhears a telephone conversation between Alice and Tony, and discovers a "love letter" Tony that has written to her, he mistakenly assumes that Alice is having an affair. Ralph and Norton, believing that Alice is planning a rendezvous with her lover at an Italian festival, disguise themselves and follow Alice and Trixie. The two women pretend not to recognize Ralph and Norton and flirt with them, leading Ralph to believe that his suspicions about Alice's infidelity are true. In other highlights, The June Taylor Dancers perform a number entitled "Do As the Romans Do" as well as variations on Italian folk songs; Ralph and Norton sing "That's When You're Glad You're Married"; Alice and Tony sing "Tutti Bella"; and Ralph, Alice, and Norton sing a reprise "Do As the Romans Do." Includes commercials. (Series title varies.)
(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
