JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {THE HONEYMOONERS: CURSE OF THE KRAMDENS} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. In this special series of musical-comedy sketches based on "The Honeymooners," bus driver Ralph Kramden, his wife, Alice, and their friends Ed and Trixie Norton have won a trip around the world in a contest held by the Flakey Wakey cereal company. In this sketch, the world travelers journey to Donnellon, Ireland, where the mayor and townspeople celebrate the impending return of a Kramden to the town. Followed by an introduction by announcer Jack Lescoulie, the sketch begins as the mayor explains that in 1827 a Kramden ran off to America with Maggie O'Toole, prompting Shamus O'Toole to place a curse upon the town. Ralph Kramden will therefore be enlisted to chase the ghost of Shamus O'Toole from the nearby castle. Following a song and dance number, with Ellen Burstyn as one of The June Taylor dancers, the Kramdens and Nortons arrive. Ralph sings about his ancestors and the four travelers sing about their vacation in the castle. When Ralph agrees to sleep in the castle, he takes Ed with him and the two capture a pair of sweepstakes counterfeiters who have been using the castle for illegal purposes. The town celebrates with a song and dance number and Gleason's monologue concludes the program. Includes commercials.

(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
