
AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE'S SALUTE TO JOHN FORD, THE (TV)
Summary
This special salute to director John Ford includes film clips from "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939), "The Quiet Man" (1952), "Stagecoach" (1939), "The Searchers" (1956), "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), "Young Mr. Lincoln" (1939), "Rio Grande" (1950), "The Wings of Eagles" (1957), "The Horse Soldiers," (1959), and others. Jack Lemmon presents the AFI John Ford Fellowships to aspiring filmmakers. Then the director of the American Film Institute, George Stevens, Jr., explains the establishment of the AFI Life Achievement Awards and presents the first award to John Ford. Also included are speeches by actor Charlton Heston (chairman of the American Film Institute's board of trustees) and honoree John Ford. President Richard M. Nixon then presents Ford with the Medal of Freedom.
