WORLD SERIES, 1952: GAME 7 {TAPE 1 OF 2} {BROOKLYN DODGERS VS. NEW YORK YANKEES} (TV)
Summary
Tape one of two. Live coverage by "Gillette Cavalcade of Sports" of the seventh game of the 1952 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Red Barber and Mel Allen call the action, Joe Black pitches for Brooklyn, and Eddie Lopat for New York. After the announcers offer statistics and batting orders, Gladys Gooding plays and sings the national anthem, and the umpires are identified. In the top of the first, the Yankees go down in order. In the bottom of the inning, Billy Cox strikes out; Reese hits a single, and McDougald hits the first base coach with the ball when he throws to first; a superimposition shows Reese on first as Duke Snider comes to bat and strikes out, and again as Jackie Robinson comes to bat and flies out to Gene Woodling in left center to end the inning. In the second, the Yankees strand Johnny Mize on first after a walk, and the Dodgers cannot advance George Shuba after a single. The Yankees go down in order in the third, and Joe Black strikes out to open the home half of the inning. With no score and one out in the bottom of the third, Billy Cox grounds out and Pee Wee Reese flies out to Irv Noren. In the top of the fourth, Phil Rizzuto doubles into left field; Mickey Mantle grounds out, sending Rizzuto to third base; Johnny Mize gets a base hit to left field, scoring Rizzuto; and Yogi Berra hits into a double play. The Yankees lead, 1-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Duke Snider singles into right field; Robinson hits a bunt single; relievers begin to warm up in the Yankee bullpen and Yankee manager Casey Stengel confers with Lopat; Roy Campanella bunts for a single to load the bases; Stengel replaces Lopat with Allie Reynolds; with three ducks on the pond, Gil Hodges hits a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Snider with the tying run; on the cut-off, the ball gets away from Reynolds, allowing Robinson to reach third while Campanella remains at first (an error is charged to Reynolds); George Shuba strikes out; and Carl Furillo grounds out to end the frame. At the end of four innings, the score is tied 1-1. After station identification, Gene Woodling opens the Yankee fifth with a home run; Irv Noren hits a high pop fly caught by Cox; Billy Martin hits a line drive single; Reynolds grounds out, moving Martin to second; and Gil McDougald grounds out. In the bottom of the fifth, Joe Black strikes out; Cox drives a double to deep right center; Reese doubles to left, scoring Cox; Duke Snider grounds out to first; and Robinson hits a line drive, caught by McDougald. Preacher Roe and Carl Erskine warm up in the Brooklyn bullpen. With the score 2-2 in the top of the sixth, Rizzuto hits a line drive grabbed by Reese for the out; Mantle hits a home run, making it 3-2 Yankees; Dodger manager Chuck Dressen contemplates the situation; Johnny Mize lines a single to right field; Dressen replaces Black with Roe; and Billy Loes starts to warm up in the Dodger bullpen.
