WORLD SERIES, 1952: GAME 6 {BROOKLYN DODGERS VS. NEW YORK YANKEES} (TV)

Live coverage by "Gillette Cavalcade of Sports" of the sixth game of the 1952 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Red Barber and Mel Allen call the action. The first eight minutes of original audio are missing and have been filled in by NBC announcer Bob Costas with facts and statistics about the first five games of the series. Brooklyn leads New York three games to two. Vic Raschi starts for the Yankees, with Billy Loes on the hill for the Dodgers. Organist Gladys Gooding plays and sings the national anthem. In the top of the first, the Yankees strand Mickey Mantle at first after a walk. In the bottom of the inning, Billy Cox leads off with a double; Pee Wee Reese pops up a bunt, caught by catcher Yogi Berra; Duke Snider walks; and Jackie Robinson hits a slow grounder that forces Cox out at third and moves Snider to second with two out. After working the count full, George Shuba grounds out to first to retire the side. In the top of the second, Berra flies out; Gene Woodling singles; and Irv Noren and Billy Martin strike out. In the bottom of the second, Roy Campanella grounds out; Gil Hodges strikes out; and Furillo hits a single for the Dodgers as Billy Loes strikes out to end the inning. In the third, both clubs go down in order. After a station identification, the Yankees strand Berra at second base after an error by Reese. In the home half of the frame, Hodges fans, leaving Roy Campanella at first. In the Yankee fifth, Irv Noren singles; Martin flies out to left field; and Raschi bunts into a double play. In the bottom of the fifth, the Dodgers waste a single by Cox. The Yankees go quietly in the sixth, and in the bottom of the inning, Snider breaks the scoreless tie with a home run; Robinson flies out to deep left; and George Shuba steps up with the Dodgers leading 1-0.
In the home half of the sixth, George Shuba strikes out and Roy Campanella grounds out to end the inning with the score 1-0 Dodgers. In the top of the seventh, Yogi Berra hits a home run; Gene Woodling singles, Loes balks him to second, and Woodling scores when Raschi hits a grounder that bounces off Loes' shin and is scored as a single. The Yankees lead 2-1. After Gil McDougald walks, sending Raschi to second, Phil Rizzuto grounds out. In the bottom of the seventh, the Dodgers strand a man on second. Following a station identification, Mickey Mantle hits a home run to open the Yankee half of the eighth; relief pitchers warm up in the Dodgers bullpen; Johnny Mize pops up; Berra flies out to right center; Woodling walks; Noren singles, sending Woodling to second; and Billy Martin grounds out to retire the side. The Yankees lead 3-1. In the bottom of the eighth, with one out, Duke Snider hits a home run; Jackie Robinson flies out to deep left field; and manager Casey Stengel confers with Raschi on the mound. (The audio drops out for the duration of the tape.) George Shuba doubles; Stengel replaces Raschi with Allie Reynolds, who retires the side to end the inning with the score Yankees 3, Dodgers 2. In the top of the ninth, McDougald singles with one out, and Rizzuto comes up to bat. (The audio resumes.) Rizzuto hits a single, moving McDougald to third; Preacher Roe replaces Loes as the Dodgers' pitcher; Mantle walks to load the bases; with the sacks juiced, Joe Collins strikes out; and Yogi Berra flies out to right field. In the bottom of the ninth, Rocky Nelson, pinch-hitting for Gil Hodges, strikes out; Carl Furillo walks; Andy Pafko, pinch-hitting for Roe, pops out to shortstop Rizzuto; and Billy Cox grounds out to end the game. The Yankees win, 3-2, forcing a seventh and deciding game. Includes commercials.
