60 MINUTES {ADMIRAL RICKOVER; THE CZAR OF CLINTON COUNTY, GOLAN AND GLOBUS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. This program features three segments, "Admiral Rickover," "The Czar of Clinton County," and "Golan and Globus." In the first segment, Diane Sawyer interviews Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the controversial naval engineer and admiral who contributed the nuclear submarine to the U.S. military. After providing information about RickoverÕs achievements and reputation for flaunting military regulations, Sawyer discusses with Rickover his disregard of the Navy code, his work ethic, and his experiences in the naval academy. Also included is an interview with former President Jimmy Carter regarding RickoverÕs abilities and the current investigations into his career. Rickover then comments on allegations that he accepted large gifts from defense contractors, as well as on his present involvement in educational programs for youth. Next, Mike Wallace travels to Clinton County, Kentucky, where the superintendent of one of the lowest ranking school districts in the nation is under investigation by the Kentucky Superintendent of Schools, the Board of Education, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Wallace provides background information on Clinton County, as well as on the funding and employment statistics of the school district. Interviews with local residents and concerned citizensÕ groups and scenes from a school-board meeting paint a picture of a mismanaged school district and a wealthy individual who uses power through the school board to rule a small county. In the third segment, Ed Bradley examines the success of notorious film producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, founders of the Cannon Group, Inc. Bradley interviews Golan and Globus; film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert; and actors and other creative talent who have worked with the Cannon Group, including Shelley Winters, Bo Derek, and Elmer Bernstein. Bradley finds that Golan and Globus attract big names such as Katharine Hepburn because they give actors creative control, and that they lure financial backers because their low-budget films make huge profits in foreign markets. He also reports that they make low-budget films by eschewing the Hollywood lifestyle and denying the creative talent the privileges to which they are accustomed. Finally, Harry Reasoner gives updates and reads audience letters in response to three past segments -- "Corporal Scott USMC," "Just What The Doctor Ordered," and "Maternity Leave." Includes commercials and public service announcements. Includes a commercial with Jackie Stewart for Ford.
