60 MINUTES {COTTAGE FOR SALE; HIJACKING; VIEWPOINT; WHY PEOPLE MURDER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, Harry Reasoner visits the estate of the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor. As Harry Reasoner is given a tour of the estate in France, the Duke and Dutchess discuss the following topics: the historical background of the estate; the ways the estate has changed over the years; why they wish to sell the estate; why they originally bought the estate; the memorabilia kept at the estate; what life would have been like if the Duke had not abdicated the throne; the number of people it takes to run the estate; and the positive aspects of living in a secluded area. In the second segment, Mike Wallace reports on hijacking. He talks about the hijacking crisis with government officials including Assistant Attorney General Will R. Wilson and John Fitzgerald, coordinator of Cuban affairs. Highlights of this segment include the following: Mike Wallace visits the control tower at Miami airport, where most hijacked planes land; an audio tape of a plane being hijacked is played; Wallace talks with a captain whose plane was hijacked and taken to Havana, Cuba; passengers from the hijacked plane comment on their experiences; the president of the Airline Pilots Administration describes what would would happen if a shoot-out took place on a plane and offers some suggestions for ways to stop hijackings from occurring; the deputy director of the Federal Aviation Administration discusses what happens on the ground during a hijacking and explains the problem of detection devices; Will R. Wilson discusses the penalty for hijacking; and John Fitzgerald talks about what the government of the United States is doing to reach an understanding with the Cuban government on the issue and discusses the reasons planes are hijacked. In the next segment, Grover Cleveland Hall, Marya Mannes, William F. Buckley, Jr., and Roy Innis give their opinions on Eric Hoffer, who was interviewed on "60 Minutes" the previous week. A piece of the segment with Hoffer is shown. In the final segment, "Why People Murder," members of the Houston homicide department comment on the following topics: murder statistics; why most murders occur; and the easy process of getting a gun. At the end of the show, Andy Rooney comments on fashion designs for women and the success of the mini-skirt. Includes commercials.
