MASTERPIECE THEATRE: TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS {PART 9 OF 13} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T86:1285. Part nine of thirteen. One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. This television adaptation of R. F. Delderfield's novel portrays life at Bamfylde, an English public boys' school, as seen through the eyes of teacher David Powlett-Jones during the years between the two world wars. In this episode Alcock begins a crusade against what he believes to be a "network of unhealthy friendships" between the school's older and younger boys. David further aggravates his tensions with the headmaster by publicly proving Alcock's assertions to be unfounded. Meanwhile, Carter becomes disenchanted with the new administration and resigns to head a preparatory school of his own. He offers David a partnership in the venture, but David decides to stay where he is for the sake of the Bamfylde students. While visiting his family in Wales, David attends a socialist meeting, and, after a tenuous beginning, develops a relationship with a Labour party candidate, Christine Forster. Alcock is furious when he reads a newspaper article describing David's active campaigning for Christine, and makes an unsuccessful appeal that he resign from Bamfylde. David's feelings for Christine become more serious, but it is apparent that she is unable to face the developments in their romance. Continues with T86:1287.
