MASTERPIECE THEATRE: THE CITADEL, EPISODE 4 (TV)

Summary

One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the title of "Masterpiece Theatre," hosted by Alistair Cooke. The fourth of ten episodes in this television adaptation of A. J. Cronin's novel set in Great Britain during the 1920s. In this episode, Dr. Manson has difficulty adjusting to his new life and to his job with the Medical Aid Society. A large group of miners withdraw from Manson's care when the young doctor proves unwilling to provide certificates excusing malingerers from work. Manson loses still more patients after a clash with the stubborn Nurse Lloyd, whose old-fashioned remedies result in the loss of a man's arm. Mine official Mr. Owen expresses his support for Manson's integrity, and subsidizes his research on the special problems caused by anthracite coal dust -- a project the image-conscious Dr. Lewellyn had discouraged. Christine accepts a dinner invitation extended by the owner of the mine, and the evening's conversation infuriates Manson, who finds the cultivated guests condescending, fatuous, and hypocritical. Christine accuses her husband of snobbish jealousy. Manson meets with the whimsical dentist Con Boland to discuss forming a common front made up of doctors under Lewellyn's supervision to demand fairer treatment. Christine is furious, hurt that she had not been consulted and fearful Manson may be fired.

This program contains a segment titled "Masterpiece Foot Notes: Foxtrot," a dance routine featuring Gary and Lori Pierce. The Pierces dance in formal dress in a large, empty ballroom.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 1997.
