JEWEL IN THE CROWN, THE, EPISODE 7: DAUGHTERS OF THE REGIMENT (TV)

Summary

Part seven of this epic fourteen-part drama which chronicles the final turbulent years of English rule in India from 1942-1947. Based on author Paul Scott's "The Raj Quartet," this mini-series concentrates on the intricate personal relationships of British and Indian characters against the backdrop of India's struggle to assert its sovereignty from the declining British Empire. The seventh episode, "Daughters of the Regiment," which takes place in 1944, centers on the women of the Layton clan. Mabel Layton dies after revealing to her friend, missionary Barbie Batchelor, why her step-daughter Mildred treats her with such scorn. While Mabel's death shocks the pregnant Susan Layton into premature labor, it causes Barbie to confront ill-tempered Mildred about Mabel's last request regarding her burial site. While in Calcutta, Sarah loses her virginity to Major Jimmy Clark after accompanying him to a concert at the home of a wealthy Indian woman.

(This series also aired on PBS under the umbrella of "Mobil Masterpiece Theatre" from December 16, 1984 through March 17, 1985.)
