NBC 60TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL (TV)

Summary

A special program which looks at the first sixty years of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), with salutes to radio and television shows of the past. With a variety of hosts, the program traces the history of NBC through clips and performances. Highlights include the following: a celebration of live television from the 1950s at the famous soundstage where most of the shows were done; clips of "Philco Television Playhouse" featuring Grace Kelly, James Dean, George C. Scott, and others; "Kraft Television Theatre" is recognized with clips of Jack Lemmon, Sidney Poitier, and Anthony Perkins; "Saturday Night Live" is reviewed with skits featuring John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, and Joe Piscopo; the history of talk shows with clips of the "Tonight Show" with Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Johnny Carson, featuring guests Richard Nixon, Liberace, Muhammad Ali, Jack Benny, Tina Turner, and Diana Ross, among others; the early days of NBC radio are looked at through the eyes of Bob Hope, including clips of Hope's Christmas shows at military bases all over the world; John Chancellor looks at historical moments that everyone will remember forever, including Pearl Harbor, John F. Kennedy's assassination, and the Space Shuttle disaster; the history of the "Today Show," featuring clips of the first telecast with Dave Garroway in 1952, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, John Chancellor, and Bryant Gumbel; a look at variety programs, with clips from "Texaco Star Theatre" featuring Milton Berle with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Tallulah Bankhead; variety highlights from "The Abbott and Costello Show," "The Jack Benny Show," "The Steve Lawrence and Eydie GormŽ Show," and "SCTV" featuring John Candy; a salute to "Hallmark Hall of Fame" with clips from its premiere and many other shows; a retrospective on police and detective shows featuring "Dragnet," "Hill Street Blues," and "CHiPs"; and the history of soap operas and game shows are looked at with clips from "Days of Our Lives," "Santa Barbara," "The Price Is Right" and "Let's Make a Deal." This program is closed-captioned. Commercials deleted.
