Summary
Part one of three. Hosted by Diana Ross, this awards presentation program honors the most popular musical achievements of 1985 in the following categories: pop/rock, country, and soul/R&B. Performances include "Eaten Alive" by Ross, "Kyrie" by Mr. Mister, "How Will I Know" by Whitney Houston, and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. Awards presentations include the following: Prince presents the award for favorite pop/rock single to Huey Lewis and the News for "Power of Love"; Sheena Easton and Starship's Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas present the award for favorite soul/R&B single to Houston for "You Give Good Love"; Laura Branigan and Lou Rawls present the award for favorite country single to Waylon Jennings for Willie Nelson's "Forgiving You is Easy"; Air Supply's Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell and Rita Coolidge present the award for favorite soul/R&B video, female, to Aretha Franklin; Deborah Allen and Smokey Robinson present the award for favorite pop/rock video, female, to Pat Benatar, and accept on her behalf; Philip Bailey and Phil Collins present the award for favorite country video, female, to Crystal Gayle, and accept on her behalf; Marilyn McCoo and Gino Vannelli present the award for favorite soul/R&B group to Kool and the Gang; New Edition and Janie Fricke present the award for favorite country group to Alabama; and Graham Nash and Juice Newton present the award for favorite pop/rock group to Chicago. After Ross reviews the past year's various charity efforts by the music industry, John Schneider, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Jennings present the first American Music Award of Appreciation of the evening to Willie Nelson for his work on Farm Aid. Clips include highlights from Live Aid and Farm Aid and a taped message from Bob Dylan.
Further performances include "Now and Forever (You and Me)" by Anne Murray, "Chain Reaction" by Ross, "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Hank Williams, Jr., and "Love 4/2" by Teddy Pendergrass. Awards presentations include the following: Apollonia Kotero and Martin Harek of A-HA present the award for favorite soul/R&B video single to Whitney Houston for "Saving All My Love"; the Commodores present the award for favorite country video single to Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson for "The Highwayman"; Julian Lennon and Amy Grant present the award for favorite pop/rock video single to Huey Lewis and the News for "Power of Love"; Paul Stanley, Eddie Rabbitt, and Billy Ocean present the award for favorite country female to Crystal Gayle (not present); Jeffrey Osborne, Nick Feldman, and Jack Hughes present the award for favorite pop/rock female to Tina Turner (not present); Frankie Avalon, Fabian, and Bobby Rydell present the award for favorite soul/R&B female to Aretha Franklin; Al Jarreau and Kim Carnes present the award for favorite soul/R&B album to Kool and the Gang for "Emergency"; and Michael Martin Murphy and Stephen Stills present the award for favorite country album to Alabama for "40 Hour Week." Lionel Richie, Julian Lennon, and Phil Collins present the Annual American Music Award of Merit to Paul McCartney. Clips include past performances of McCartney's, both solo and in Wings and the Beatles; films featuring music written by McCartney; and McCartney's videos. Also includes taped messages from Little Richard, Peggy Lee, Chevy Chase, and Pete Townshend.
Other performances include "Another Night" by Aretha Franklin, "Emergency" by Kool and the Gang, and a tribute to the late Rick Nelson by his sons, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. Awards presentations include the following: Ray Parker, Jr., and John Parr present the award for favorite pop/rock album to Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A"; Marlon Jackson and El DeBarge present the award for favorite country video, male, to Hank Williams, Jr.; Jack Wagner and the Motels' Martha Davis present the award for favorite soul/R&B video, male, to Stevie Wonder; LaToya Jackson and "Weird" Al Yankovic present the award for favorite pop/rock video, male, to Springsteen (not present); Sheila E., David Foster, and Lee Greenwood present the award for favorite pop/rock video, group, to George Michael for WHAM!; Larry Blackmon and Gary Morris present the award for favorite country video, group, to Johnny Cash and John Schneider for "The Highwayman"; James Ingram and Animotion's Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams present the award for favorite soul/R&B video, group, to the Pointer Sisters (not present); Fee Waybill and Freddie Jackson present the award for favorite country male to Johnny Cash and John Schneider for Willie Nelson; Rebbie Jackson and REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin present the award for favorite soul/R&B, male, to Stevie Wonder; and Janet Jackson and Exile present the award for favorite pop/rock male to Springsteen. WHAM!'s George Michael and James Ingram, Billy Ocean, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Roger Daltrey present the second American Music Award of Appreciation of the evening to Bob Geldof for his work on African famine relief. Clips include a performance of "I Don't Like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats on American Bandstand; Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas"; the USA for Africa "We Are the World" video; and highlights from the Live Aid concert. Also included in this segment are taped statements by Kenny Loggins and Joan Baez. Diana Ross presents the third American Music Award of Appreciation of the evening to Harry Belafonte for his work on African famine relief. Clips include past performances and press conferences featuring Belafonte and highlights from the USA for Africa video. Ross invites Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, and others up to the stage for special recognition in the USA for Africa effort and the original participants in the "We Are the World" video are invited to the stage to join Ross and the others in a performance of the song.
