ABC SUNDAY NIGHT MOVIE: KATHERINE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of movie presentations. This fictional made-for-television drama examines the life of Katherine Alman, a young heiress who realizes her true calling during the tumultuous 1960s. After graduating from college, instead of going to graduate school, Katherine travels to South America where she attempts to teach the peasants how to read, much to the displeasure of Senor Vega, the mayor of the community. Vega refuses to let his people learn how to read and drives a local man away into the mountains to prove his point. Katherine joins the man in the mountains where his friends are planning a revolution against Vega but she opposes their revolutionary methods. When she confronts Vega about the issue, she is asked by the ambassador to the United States to leave the country. Returning to the United States, she takes a job in the South teaching black children at a free school. There she meets Bob, a fellow teacher who is equally critical about the way society is run. The two become romantically involved and set out as travelling radicals, preaching peace and alternative ways to disagree with government policies. When Katherine becomes pregnant and decides to have an abortion, Bob is unhappy with her decision. The couple then join an underground group of revolutionaries, who are ready and willing to use violence in order to spread their message. Katherine and Bob's relationship starts to deteriorate and Bob goes to Canada because the FBI is looking for him. This leaves Katherine with nobody but her revolutionary friends and she goes completely underground, basically dropping out of society and breaking off communication with her loving family. At a demonstration, Katherine gets arrested but doesn't expect to show up for her court date. She visits her family to assure them that she is all right. The underground movement sends her on a mission to plant a bomb in a bank, but the plan doesn't work out the way it was supposed to. Commercials deleted.
