Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs, hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews with newsmakers and people in the political and cultural forefront. Cavett devotes this entire program to an interview with filmmaker Orson Welles. Topics include the following: Welles's fear of critics; his own experience in journalism when he was a thirteen-year-old music critic for a Chicago newspaper; an anecdote about an unnamed Mexican director who shot an unflattering film critic; methods for directing actors who were older than he; Welles's self-description; and the stark contrast between the peaceful set of "Citizen Kane" and the uneasy relationship with front office studio executives at the time. In addition, Welles says that "Sesame Street" was the "best thing that ever happened to television"; offers his views on love and sex; remembers being live on a radio network when Pearl Harbor was bombed; reveals that President Franklin D. Roosevelt told him no one believed his Pearl Harbor announcement because of Welles's "War of the Worlds" prank; describes his three daughters and why he believes he is a bad parent; says he believes women are vastly superior to men; criticizes Vice President Spiro Agnew for "spreading fear"; chides political radicals on both the right and the left; recalls the time he attended a party for movie mogul Louis B. Mayer with a live bunny in his pocket; condemns I.Q. tests as an "invasion of privacy" and reveals his favorite film directors. Welles also reads a lengthy letter from Antoine De St. Exupery's "Wind, Sand and the Stars." Commercials deleted.

(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the show aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety series on CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)
