Summary

One in this series of New York Philharmonic programs intended for young audiences and featuring musical analysis interspersed with performance. In this program from Lincoln Center, Thomas discusses the age-old questions: What is noise? What is music? Michael Tilson Thomas says, "Music is a pattern, a design made out of sound." Thomas conducts the following works, each of which is preceded by analysis: the "Toy Symphony" by Leopold Mozart with the Newark Boys Chorus making sounds on an assortment of toys; Canticle No. 3 by Lou Harrison; "Putnam's Camp" from "Three Places in New England" by Charles Ives; and "Epiphany" from "Feste Romane" by Ottorino Respighi. Commercials deleted.
