Summary

This Kennedy Center celebration honors George Abbott, Lillian Gish, Benny Goodman, Gene Kelly, and Eugene Ormandy. The honorees are paid tribute in the following highlights: Walter Cronkite introduces each of the honorees; President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan appear at a White House reception for the honorees; Betty Buckley sings "Memory" from "Cats"; Harold Prince presents a film tribute to Abbott; Eddie Albert, Tom Bosley, Van Johnson, Hal Linden, and Jean Stapleton sing "Heart" from "Damn Yankees"; Eva Marie Saint presents a film tribute to Gish; Leona Mitchell sings "Mi Chiamano Mimi" from Puccini's "La Boheme"; Andre Previn presents a film tribute to Goodman; Lionel Hampton plays "Air Mail Special"; Peggy Lee sings "Where or When"; and Hampton plays "Sing, Sing, Sing." Claudette Colbert discusses financial support for the Kennedy Center with Chairman Roger L. Stevens; the cast of "On Your Toes" sings and dances to the title song; Eugene Istomin presents a film tribute to Ormandy; Isaac Stern plays the second movement from Mozart's Violin Concerto in G Major, K. 216; Yves Montand presents a film tribute to Kelly; Gregory Hines sings and dances to "I Got Rhythm" and "Fascinating Rhythm"; and Donald O'Connor, Cyd Charisse, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green perform "Singin' in the Rain." Commercials deleted.
