WORLD SERIES, 1980: GAME 1 {KANSAS CITY ROYALS VS. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES} (TV)

Summary

The program contains live coverage from Veteran's Stadium in Philadelphia, of the first game of the 1980 World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Kansas City Royals. Pre-game highlights include the following: Bryant Gumbel reviews the Phillies' season and the Royals' season; Gumbel interviews Royals' slugger George Brett and Phillies' masher Mike Schmidt; color commentators Tom Seaver and Tony Kubek offer their thoughts about how the Series might develop, while play-by-play man Joe Garagiola promises the "unexpected"; the players are introduced; the All Philadelphia Boys' Choir and Mens' Chorale sings "The Star-Spangled Banner"; Eddie Sawyer, manager of the 1950 Phillies, throws out the first ball; and the Phillies take the field. Game highlights include the following: Royal Amos Otis clouts a home run with a man on base, giving Kansas City a 2-0 lead; Willie Mays Aikens hits a home run in the top of the third to put Kansas City ahead 4-0; Bob Boone drives in a run with a double in the bottom of the inning and then scores when Lonnie Smith is caught in a rundown between first and second; Bake McBride caps off the Phillies' five-run third with a three-run homer, putting the Phillies on top 5-4; and Bob Boone doubles home Manny Trillo in the bottom of the fourth to give the Phillies a 6-4 lead.

Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek call the action, with commentary and analysis from Tom Seaver. Further game highlights include the following: Bob Boone drives in a run with a double in the Phillies' fourth giving the Phillies a 6-4 lead; Kansas City pitcher Renie Martin relieves Dennis Leonard in the fourth; Garry Maddox drives in a run with a sacrifice fly in the Phillies' fifth; Willie Mays Aikens hits a two-run home run in Kansas City's eighth to cut the Phillies lead to 7-6; Phillies pitcher Tug McGraw relieves Bob Walk in the eighth; and McGraw strikes out Willie Wilson to end game one. The Phillies win game one, 7-6. Includes commercials.
