Summary

In this documentary, Alan Alda and Marlo Thomas look back at how women's roles in life have changed throughout the twentieth century. This program contains footage of famous female figures in history including the following: Carrie Chapman Catt speaking about women's voting rights; Clara Bow in the silent movie "Hula"; Margaret Sanger talking about birth control and what it should mean to women; Margaret Mead working as an anthropologist; Josephine Baker performing in the Follies; Bessie Smith singing the blues in the only movie she ever made; Mae West singing "Sister Honky Tonk"; Shirley Temple singing "On the Good Ship Lollipop"; Amelia Earhart and her husband G.P. Putman saying goodbye to each other before one of her flights; Eleanor Roosevelt traveling around the United States during the Depression; Babe Didrikson Zaharias playing golf; Doctor M.F. Farnham putting down careers for women; Lucille Ball on "I Love Lucy" showing how she inspires generosity from her husband; Doris Day with James Garner in "The Thrill of It All," a movie about a wife who wants a career; Marlo Thomas in "That Girl"; Julia Child showing that it is permissible to make a mistake when cooking; Civil Rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer speaking about voter rights; Mary Parkman Peabody upon her release from jail for participating in a Civil Rights march; Jeannette Rankin speaking at a Vietnam War protest; Bella Abzug speaking out against the Vietnam War; Gloria Steinem giving a speech about roles in life; Barbara Jordan giving a speech at the First National Women's Conference in Houston; Erma Louise Bombeck on a talk show; Sally Field as a labor organizer in the film "Norma Rae"; and Mary Tyler Moore on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."
