SAGA OF WESTERN MAN: REHEARSAL FOR D-DAY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of irregularly scheduled documentaries. This report focuses on the Aug. 19, 1942, invasion of Dieppe in northern France and how the lessons of the raid's failure were used to prepare for D-Day. Highlights of this program include the following: German army marches through Paris; Luftwaffe bombs Britain; Whitehall, the nerve center of Britain's military efforts and home of its chiefs of staff; Lord Louis Mountbatten, ordered to England by Winston S. Churchill in October 1941 to organize the invasion of Europe (D-Day), recalls his assignment; Lord Lovat remembers the training of the British commandos; ABC correspondent John MacVane discusses the Russian demand for a second front and U.S. entry into the war after Pearl Harbor; Mountbatten discusses the second front and the proposed invasion of the port of Dieppe; Canadian army officer Lt. Col. Churchill Mann recalls the strategy for Dieppe; training of Canadian troops, including a landing exercise; MacVane recalls the aborted Dieppe attempt; Mountbatten discusses remounting the Dieppe raid; the Dieppe raid, including eyewitness accounts; Vice Adm. John Hughes-Hallett, Mountbatten, and Churchill discuss the heavy casualties and analyze the lessons learned from the failed raid; Mountbatten and MacVane compare the Dieppe raid with the D-Day invasion; D-Day strategy; and the Dieppe memorial parade. Commercials deleted. This is a black-and-white copy of a color broadcast.
