In part one of this two-part report, Murrow presents doctors, scientists, and tobacco industry spokesmen who discuss evidence pro and con linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer. Graham, Washington University Medical School, discusses the increase in the lung cancer rate since World War I; Dr. Ernest L. Wynder describes his cigarette smoking machine and tests with mice; Dr. W. C. Hueper, National Cancer Institute, says he doesn't believe evidence supports smoking as a major cause of lung cancer; Prof. Paul Kotin, University of Southern California, describes a breathing experiment with mice that focuses on other causes of cancer; Edward Cuyler Hammond, American Cancer Society, discusses his study of smoking habits and death rates among white American males; American Medical Association President Elmer Hess says he doesn't believe smoking causes cancer; Charles S. Cameron, American Cancer Society, discusses skepticism of statistics and demands for proof; a cigarette industry spokesman denies correlation between smoking and cancer; and Timothy V.
