VIRGINIAN, THE: THE EVIL THAT MEN DO (TV)
Summary
One in this series of western dramas set in 1890s Wyoming on the Shiloh Ranch, which is owned by Judge Henry Garth and managed by the laconic foreman known as "the Virginian." In this episode, the influence of environment on one's character is examined when the judge takes Matthew Cordell, an embittered ex-convict, under his wing. At the insistence of the Virginian, the judge convinces the liberal-minded warden of the state penitentiary to parole Matthew Cordell into his custody, where he will be employed as a blacksmith. Incarcerated for most of his life, the sullen, mistrustful stranger feels uncomfortable with the idyllic rhythms of ranch life and prefers his own company, which raises the ire of his more gregarious bunkmates. Despite her father's intervention, Betsy finds herself drawn to Cordell and tries to pull him out of his shell. However, when a drunken cowboy picks a fight at a local dance, Cordell's innate propensity for violence threatens to jeopardize his newfound freedom. Commercials deleted.
