SUPER BOWL XII {DALLAS COWBOYS VS. DENVER BRONCOS} (PART 2 OF 2) (TV)

Summary

(Continues from T81:0846) Live coverage of Super Bowl XII, the National Football League championship game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos from the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Highlights of this portion include the following: Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier discuss the quarterbacks; the teams are introduced, as the camera -- and the announcers -- dwell on the Cowboy cheerleaders; gridiron great Red Grange presides over the coin toss; Phyllis Kelly sings the national anthem; Denver kicks off to Dallas; Tony Dorsett's touchdown run gives the Cowboys the lead in the first quarter, 7-0; an Efren Herrera field goal extends the lead to 10-0; the first quarter ends and the second quarter begins; another Herrera field goal gives Dallas a second quarter lead of 13-0 over Denver; and Herrera misses his third field goal of the day as the first half comes to an end. The halftime show features jazz great Pete Fountain and his band and celebrates New Orleans' French influence. Other halftime highlights include the following: a sequence features several seconds of silent video of the halftime festivities, followed by chants of "ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ray"; slow-motion video of football highlights is set to Barbra Streisand's song "The Way We Were"; and Brent Musburger recaps the first half. The game portion of the telecast is augmented periodically by selections from sports artist Leroy Neiman's "electronic palate."

The third quarter begins, with Brookshier continuing his quest for a "10" among the Cowboy cheerleaders; a Jim Turner field goal makes the score 13-3 Dallas; Butch Johnson makes a spectacular catch of a Roger Staubach pass for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-3, Dallas; a Denver touchdown and extra point make it 20-10, Dallas; the third quarter ends; the 1977 "Punt, Pass, and Kick" national champions are introduced; the fourth quarter begins; an option pass from Robert Newhouse to Golden Richards brings the score to 27-10, Dallas; on the Cowboy sideline, players Harvey Martin and Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson taunt the defeated Broncos, dismissing their vaunted "Orange Crush" defense as "soda water"; Martin and Randy White are named co-MVPs; and the game ends, with a final score of 27-10, Dallas. Post-game highlights include the following: commissioner Pete Rozelle presents Dallas with the Vince Lombardi Trophy; interviews with Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Randy White, Harvey Martin, Red Miller, Craig Morton, and Tony Dorsett; game highlights in review; the spectral, disembodied head of Jack Whitaker offers final comments, calling the Super Bowl "ineffably American"; and a film tribute to the Dallas Cowboys with Frank Sinatra singing "The Winners." Includes commercials and promos.
