SAGA OF WESTERN MAN: I AM A SOLDIER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of irregularly scheduled documentaries. This program focuses on the American soldiers in "A" Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, who are fighting in Vietnam. Highlights of this program include the following: the U.S. Army installation at An Khe, 250 miles northeast of Saigon; the commanding officer, Capt. Theodore Danielsen, introduces himself to new company members, and advises them on how to protect themselves during their mission; Danielsen discusses his responsibility for his men's safety, and trains the men in target practice, rappeling, and as paratroopers; A Company prepares equipment for a combat mission; helicopters airlift troops to action and A Company pursues the Viet Cong; the Viet Cong abandon their base camp, which Americans burn; Danielsen sums up victory in Vietnam as accomplishing one's mission with no casualties; as part of brigade sweep, A company moves out; watching for booby traps, the company proceeds slowly; the company captures several Viet Cong and tend to their wounded; the war booty includes American-made weapons; the company returns to An Khe; in a small town three miles from An Khe, soldiers seek recreation and make contact with the Vietnamese people; A company is assigned to protect a convoy moving west along Highway 19 to Pleiku; Danielsen and his men investigate an ambushed civilian truck; a medals ceremony; and Danielsen and soldiers pay tribute to their fallen comrades.
