Smith provides background on the history of South Africa and Edward Murrow describes, in voice-over, how such precious ores as gold, diamonds, and uranium have boosted the economy; the city of Johannesburg; the social conditions of the Bantu, the non-white majority; the Dutch minority, the Afrikaner; a male Afrikaner commenting on his belief that the Bantu are inferior; historian Leo Marquard commenting on the political future of South Africa; the recruitment of Bantus to work the mines, including a look at their living and working conditions; a portrait of Dr. Johannes Strijdom, the Nationalist Party's candidate for prime minister, and his racial policies; the apartheid plank's success in the election of Nov. 30, 1954; the interior minister on apartheid; the new Bantu education laws that force Anglican and Catholic missions to close schools to protest the government's attempt to give Bantus an inferior education; and comments by Dr. A.B.
