Summary
One in this series of science documentaries. This program, part two of two, explores the advancement of the space program with a special emphasis on the economics involved. The building and use of the first space shuttle, called the Enterprise, is the main focus of NASA's effort to minimize cost. Highlights of this program include: the possibilities of space stations with closed-life support systems; the recruitment process for potential astronauts; the lure of space as a source of growth for major industries; the potential use of resources already in space to build solar power satellites that would heat the earth; and the transportation of materials great distances through space. Throughout the program, there is footage of the Enterprise's experimental phases and simulated footage of the shuttle's capabilities. The following people offer comments on the space program: the head of NASA's Office of Space Flight, John F. Yardley; astronomer and former astronaut, Brian O'Leary; the head of the Johnson Space Center, Christopher Kraft Jr.; and NASA's chief spacecraft designer, Max Faget. This program contains animation and sketch drawings.
