TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {17TH ANNIVERSARY} (TV)

Summary

The seventeenth anniversary program in this series of talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. This special features clips from past "Tonight Show" programs. Highlights include the following: Carson introduces the show with his monologue; he reminisces back to his first show as host; and Carson and his sidekick Ed McMahon give a preview of the upcoming NBC fall television line-up. Clip highlights include the following: Dom Deluise prepares to perform a magic trick with some eggs, but it devolves into an egg-tossing session between him, Carson, and a whipped cream-toting Burt Reynolds; Sally Field surprises Carson by spraying shaving cream all over him; an appearance by the inept magician, Carnac the Magnificient; Steve Martin finishes his visit but doesn't want to leave even though he pretends he has some "movie star" stuff to do; Anthony Quinn follows Martin and pulls the same routine; phony commercials that involve pie throwing and one that took many takes because the pie always missed Carson's face; Dolly Parton talks about all the jokes that are made about her gargantuan breasts; around holiday time, Carson and McMahon display new toys on the market; guest host Don Rickles breaks Carson's beloved cigarette box; in an unrehearsed moment, Steve Lawrence drags Carson on stage to sing a duet of "Our Love Is Here To Stay"; Joan Embry of the San Diego Zoo brings many different animals to the show and Carson shows his admiration; Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Orchestra play a number for the live audience; clips of more phony commercials; Bob Hope, Dean Martin, and George Gobel become involved in a spotlight battle; a barroom brawl is staged with western actors Doug McClure and James Drury, with Carson throwing the first and last punch; Jimmy Stewart recites an original poem; Jack Webb, star of "Dragnet," does a spoof of that show; a selection of Carson's many outrageous stunts; in the only black-and-white clip of the special, Ed Ames, having played a Native American on "Daniel Boone," demonstrates a tomahawk-throwing technique and the tomahawk lands in an unlikely spot. Includes commercials.
