Summary
One in this series of lavish, vaudeville-inspired weekly variety programs. Guest host Betty Grable opens the show dancing with a male chorus that sings "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street." Highlights of this program include the following: The Mathurins, a comic duo of tumblers from Paris; the Smothers Brothers, whose comic routine includes jokes about their childhood ("Mother always liked you best"), Johnny Appleseed, and Tommy reciting a poem for Grable; Harry James and his orchestra play "Cherry" and "Sunday Morning" (Buddy Rich solos on drums); Robert Bandy and his tigers; Diahann Carroll sings a medley including "Blues in the Night" and "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home"; Henny Youngman (with prop violin) performs a comic routine about his wife; Grable, in a sailor suit and with a male chorus, tap dances to the James band playing "Shiny Stockings"; Youngman sings "I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl That Married Harry James"; and Grable and Youngman conclude with an announcement of next week's bill. Includes commercials. Also includes the Democratic National Committee's paid political announcement for the re-election of President Lyndon B. Johnson, in which he says the basic principles of American life are under attack and that the national prosperity is in jeopardy (Political announcement is incomplete).
