CBS REPORTS: THE BOSTON GOES TO CHINA (TV)

Summary

One in this series of irregularly scheduled in-depth reports. This program documents the Boston Symphony Orchestra's March 1979 tour of China, the first major cultural exchange between the U.S. and China since normalization of relations. Orchestral music conducted by Seiji Ozawa is excerpted throughout and includes works by Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Gershwin, Beethoven, and Sousa. Concertmaster Joseph Silverstein meets with U.S. Ambassador Leonard Woodcock and with the recently freed concertmaster of the Peking Symphony. Also includes a U.S. fashion show, a visit to the Great Wall, excerpts from a Chinese revolutionary symphony, and Ozawa's visit to his childhood home in Peking. Includes commercials.
