HOLOCAUST: THE STORY OF THE FAMILY WEISS: PART I: THE GATHERING DARKNESS (TV)
Summary
Episode one of this drama that follows the experiences of the Weiss family in the years of the Holocaust during the Nazi era. In this installment, Karl marries a Gentile in 1935, and there is friction between their families; the young lawyer Erik Dorf and his wife are treated by Dr. Josef Weiss; Dorf joins the Nazi Party and is attached to the S.S.; the Weisses begin to feel restrictions and harassment in their lives; and Karl is arrested by the Gestapo. Next, Dorf rises in the ranks of the S.S.; Dr. Josef Weiss is deported to Poland without his family; Karl is sent to Buchenwald; Dorf and Eichmann plan the extermination of European Jewry; and, in Poland, a synagogue is burned in 1939 with its congregation inside. Dr. Josef Weiss and his brother Moses become leaders of the Jewish Council of Warsaw as 1940 dawns, and Karl is beaten by guards at Buchenwald as Dorf begins plans for the extermination of European Jewry. Rudi Weiss meets Helena Slomova in Prague and they run away together. Commercials deleted.
