ABC'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS {THRILLA IN MANILLA; HOCKEY} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of sports programs. This program presents a taped broadcast of the "Thrilla in Manila," the world heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, held in the Philippines on Oct. 1, 1975. Cosell surveys the pre-fight training of the boxers and reviews the two previous Ali-Frazier fights. The fifteen-round fight begins. Fight highlights include the following: in round one, Ali performs his "Ali shuffle"; in round two, Ali is warned about holding scores with several good punches; and in rounds four through twelve, Frazier stays on top of Ali, but Ali continues to score as well.

Fight highlights include the following: in round thirteen, Ali lands some punches and Frazier begins to tire; in round fourteen, Ali remains on top as he lands several blows to the head; and in round fifteen, Frazier decides not to come out of his corner. Ali wins the fight, retaining the heavyweight crown. Next, Warner Wolf presents the results of a hockey game between the Stanley Cup champion Philadelphia Flyers and the Soviet Army team. Howard Cosell talks to Ali about the win over Frazier and Wolf reviews the week's sports news. Includes commercials.
