Summary
Part seven of seven in this week-long CBS "Celebration of 50 Years." Tape one of two. In this portion, Carol Burnett, Art Carney, Isabel Sanford, Sherman Hemsley, Mary Tyler Moore, Carroll O'Connor, and Walter Cronkite review notable programs, including the following: "Gunsmoke," with regulars James Arness, Dennis Weaver, Amanda Blake, and Milburn Stone, and guest stars Bette Davis, Ellen Burstyn, Will Geer, and Jon Voight; "The Gene Autry Show"; and Richard Boone's "Have Gun, Will Travel." The program includes a screen test for "The Defenders" and Frank Sinatra singing "Lover." Also featured are clips from "The Honeymooners," "All in the Family," and "The 64,000 Question," "I've Got a Secret," and "To Tell the Truth." Next, Burnett, Carney, Sanford, Hemsley, Moore, O'Connor, and Cronkite, review other notable programs, including the following: "Perry Mason"; "The U.S. Steel Hour"; a production of "Surprise Wedding" with Audrey Meadows, Jose Ferrer, and Sid Caesar; "The Bob Newhart Show"; and a song tribute to spinoffs with a clip from "The Jeffersons." Other highlighted programs include "Gilligan's Island," "My Three Sons," "CBS Reports," "Mission: Impossible," "The Carol Burnett Show," "Barnaby Jones," "Mannix," "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" and "Cannon."
Other programs are reviewed featuring the following singers: Julie Andrews, Barbra Streisand, the Dave Clark Five, Simon and Garfunkel, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald with Mel Torme. Also featured are clips from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." CBS Board Chairman William S. Paley speaks on the importance of broadcasting and Walter Cronkite recites Norman Corwin's "Network at Fifty."
