Summary

Day two of this live coverage of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, featuring special coverage of an afternoon session devoted to debate on the Vietnam plank of the party platform. Walter Cronkite reviews the aborted Ted Kennedy candidacy, and Dan Rather interviews a delegate involved in the August 27th ejection, during which Rather was punched. Next is a clip of Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox withdrawing his presidential candidacy. Vietnam plank interviews include the following: Daniel Schorr with Sen. Philip Hart; Mike Wallace with Richard Goodwin and William J. vanden Heuvel, who threaten to nominate Johnson if the anti-war plank is not adopted; and Bill Stout with Jesse Unruh. Cronkite comments on press curbs at the convention and Kenneth O'Donnell comments on the Vietnam plank. Harry Reasoner reports on debate procedures and Rather interviews Texas Gov. John Connally on the Vietnam plank. The majority plank calling for a bombing halt after the reading of assurances from Hanoi. The so-called McCarthy and McGovern minority or "anti-war" plank calling for an immediate unconditional bombing halt is read. Speaking for the majority plank are Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie, Wyoming Sen. Gale McGee, and Missouri Gov. Warren Hearnes. Speaking for the minority plank are California Cong. Phillip Burton, Paul O'Dwyer of N.Y., and Kenneth O'Donnell.
