KRAFT TELEVISION THEATRE: KEEP OUR HONOR BRIGHT (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas presented by Kraft. In this program, James Dean plays a college student accused of cheating on a final exam. As the story begins, Matt Matthewson, the chairman of the Honor Committee at a small university, and his fiance, Sally, eagerly anticipate the posting of the semester grades. When news arrives that Sally has passed all of her classes, the couple begin to make plans for their future. Complications ensue when Matt is summoned for a meeting of the Honor Committee. A likable senior named Jim stands accused of stealing an answer key to the final biology exam. Despite Jim's popularity with students and his forthrightness in facing the charges, Matt pushes for the maximum term of punishment and the committee votes, somewhat reluctantly, for Jim's immediate expulsion. As a final plea, Jim submits to Matt the names of others who have cheated in the class. Matt is distraught to find Sally's name among those listed. At home, Matt struggles to compose the commencement address amid doubts about Sally's character. His overbearing father encourages him to acquit Sally at any cost, even if it requires unethical conduct. Sally, meanwhile, pays a visit to the hospital, where Jim is being kept after swallowing too many sleeping pills. The school board gathers to settle the embarrassing matter, and ultimately decides to expel those students who are proven to have cheated. Having removed Sally's name, Matt submits the list of those accused to the Dean. When Sally finds out that Matt has personally exempted her from the punishment meted out to the others, she breaks off their engagement. On the day of commencement, just moments before his scheduled speech, Matt must make a critical ethical decision. Includes commercials.
