ABC'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS: TENTH ANNIVERSARY (TV)

Summary

An anniversary special featuring the highlights of the ten-year run of this sports program. The program opens with looks at its premiere on April 29, 1961, and the past ten winners of the "Athlete of the Year" award. Bill Toomey, a former decathlon winner, speaks, and the 1961 USA-USSR track meet and the 1964 Eiffel Tower climb are featured. The difficulties of announcing are examined, followed by a look at the ultimate achievements in sports. Includes a look at the 1970 Soccer Championship in Mexico, and Pelé is featured. Doug Wilson, a producer of this series, sings "The Wide World." Next, drag-racing and a look at the human aspect of sports, followed by an examination of the problems of commentators and interviewers. After this is a look at the "Wide World of Sports" entry in the 1966 London-Brighton antique car race. The line between success and disaster in sports is examined in bobsledding, motorcycle racing, and skiing. The 1967 World Figure Skating Championship in Vienna is noted, and Howard Cosell reports on boxing as highlights of Muhammad Ali's career are shown. Includes commercials.
