Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in Los Angeles and moderated by the Museum's director Barbara Dixon, this seminar examines "The Practice," a drama series about a struggling Boston law practice headed by idealistic attorney Bobby Donnell.

Robert Breech, executive producer of the show, opens by presenting a preview screening for that night's episode (not included on this tape). After the screening, Dixon presents the panelists including the show's creator and executive producer David E. Kelley as well as cast members Michael Badalucco, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jessica Capshaw, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Dylan McDermott, Marla Sokoloff, and Kelli Williams. Kelley begins by talking about the genesis of the show, and what he wants the show to talk about in the legal system. He also talks about his previous career as a practicing attorney.

Next, cast members talk about their characters and what drew them to their parts. Kelley talks about how he deals with current issues on the show like September 11, 2001, and controversial issues like the Catholic Church. Manheim discusses storylines that have interested her in the past. Questions from the audience then lead to an examination of the following topics: actors resembling their cast members; Boston as a show setting; Kelley's dealings with his writing staff; actor's past stage work; what Kelley looks for when casting; Boyle's Golden Globe dress and her work with David Lynch; the show being moved to Monday nights; and how Kelley writes for female characters.
