MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: WOULD YOU BELIEVE . . . A GET SMART REUNION? {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Held at the Museum in Los Angeles, and moderated by Barbara Dixon, vice president and director of the Museum, this seminar reunites the cast and crew of "Get Smart," a 1960s comedy series about a bumbling secret agent, Maxwell Smart. Panelists include star Don Adams, cast members Barbara Feldon and Bernie Kopell, producer/writer Leonard B. Stern, producer/director Jay Sandrich, and producer Burt Nodella. After a highlight tape of the show's greatest moments, Stern opens by discussing how "Get Smart" came to be and how it was originally done for ABC. Sandrich details how the concept originally came to the show's creators -- Buck Henry and Mel Brooks. Nodella discusses problems early on in the series. Adams talks about not being the original choice to play Smart, his distinctive voice, and his early acting work on detective shows with Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard. Feldon and Kopell detail how they became a part of the show as well. Adams also discusses his forays into directing and producing the show. Questions from the audience then lead to an examination of the following topics: the opening credit sequence; Don Rickles's guest spots; favorite villains on the show; doing one-camera comedy; favorite show props such as the shoe phone; the "Get Smart" reunion movies; Dick Gautier's work as Heime the Robot; and potential DVD releases for the show. Of note, Adams's best friend and Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, as well as "Will and Grace"'s Eric McCormack ask questions from the audience. This recording of the seminar ends abruptly.
