BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF UGLY BETTY, THE (TV)
Summary
This special episode features highlights from the first season in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance. Narrated by "Ugly Betty" co-star Vanessa Williams, interviews with four of the creative minds behind the series are blended with scenes to illustrate the points being made.
Creator Silvio Horta discusses the series' theme of being "be true to yourself." Writer Veronica Becker talks about how Betty's "inner Betty-ness" shines through. Williams refers to her own character Wilhelmina Slater as a "fashion force of nature." Then, Williams looks at the rest of the Suarez family: Ignacio, Hilda, Justin, and Santos. Next, Williams discusses Ignacio's somewhat shameful past, having illegally immigrated to America. Writer Sarah Kucserka, Becker, and executive producer Marco Pennette detail Betty's life in the hostile work environment of Mode magazine amongst its "mean girls." Williams discusses Betty's one friend at Mode, Christina, as well as Betty's biggest nemeses, Amanda and Marc. Williams also discusses Betty's boss Daniel Meade. Then, Williams discusses how Betty goes "above and beyond" the call of duty in helping Daniel and doing her job at Mode. Pennette details how Betty is a "caretaker." Becker talks about how Daniel and Betty forged a friendship.
Next, Williams discusses Daniel's "high maintenance" mother Claire. Williams also details Daniel's father Bradford and his presumed-dead brother Alex. Then, Williams discusses how Wilhelmina and a mystery women plotted Bradford's downfall. Next, Becker looks at "total dork" Henry, Betty's co-worker and fantasy man. Then, Horta looks at the difference between Betty's life in Manhattan at Mode, and at home in Queens. Then, Pennette discusses when Justin "landed in Oz" and got to spend a day at Mode. Likewise, amusement was created when Mode employees were forced to go to Queens. Then, Williams discusses Betty's "fish out of water" love life with Henry. Later, Williams look at the fashion backdrop of the show. Pennette discusses fashion as a "character" on the show. Next, Williams looks at how Betty had a chance to put the fashion world behind her when she met magazine editor Sofia Reyes.
Williams also looks at Daniel's relationship with Sofia. Next, Williams discuss Wilhelmina, her partner in crime, and the "bombshell" they dropped: Alex Meade was still alive and had undergone a sex change to become Alexis. Kucserka discusses how Alexis's arrival on the scene affected both Mode and the Meade family. Williams further details how Claire tried to reunite her two children. Kucserka also discusses how Alexis is the character on the show closest in nature to Betty. Williams also details how it was eventually found that Claire -- not Bradford -- had killed Fey Sommers. The program ends by discussing how season one drew to a close: with Wilhelmina trying to seduce Bradford, Ignacio struggling to get a green card, and Betty learning that staying true to oneself can be a full-time job. Includes commercials.
