COMMANDER IN CHIEF: UNFINISHED BUSINESS {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The series finale in this drama series about America's first female president, Mackenzie Allen. In this episode, Mackenzie thinks about who will paint her official presidential portrait. Then, Mackenzie preps for a "Get Out the Vote" town hall meeting, fielding sample questions from Dickie, Jim, Rebecca, Horace, and others. Rebecca stays glued to her secret I.M. buddy for most of the prep. Meanwhile, Nathan continues trying to figure out the best way to defeat Mackenzie in the upcoming election. Then, the death of the long-time Illinois House of Representatives Speaker gives Mackenzie the opening she needs to ratify the Constitution and the Equal Rights Amendment. Now, Mackenzie needs to find just three more states willing to ratify the E.R.A. Meanwhile, Rod wonders if he should allow Sunday Times Magazine reporter Jeremy Dobris to do a story on his "presidential marriage." Kelly, however, has a history with Jeremy: He's her ex-husband. Later, Mackenzie meets with Florida State Senate Majority Leader Christine Chambers to get a feel for where she is on passage of the E.R.A. Christine sees no reason for the amendment, thinking it purely "symbolic." Dickie, too, feels that it is detrimental to Mackenzie's presidency to revisit the E.R.A. That night, Mackenzie asks for feedback on the E.R.A. from Rebecca, who thinks it is just opening the door for her to get drafted. Soon enough, the press is vigorously questioning Mackenzie's agenda, wondering where it will lead. Then, Nathan meets with Christine, wanting to get her support. She remains unwilling to fully commit to either side. The next morning, Mackenzie speaks with her mother about the history of feminism and the E.R.A. Kelly tells Vince about her past relationship with Jeremy as the reporter meets with Mackenzie for the first time. Meanwhile, Jim considers whether he should accept Mackenzie's offer to be her running mate. Mackenzie again meets with Christine, who claims that she will block E.R.A. legislation in the Florida Senate, though the president makes progress in convincing her otherwise. Then, Nathan goes on Gordon Blake's talk show, where he criticizes Mackenzie for pulling the E.R.A. out of the "wastebasket of history." Nathan also officially declares himself a candidate for president. Now, Mackenzie and her staff realize the upcoming "Get Out the Vote" appearance will become an impromptu debate with Nathan. Later, Dickie tracks down Christine, telling her that he could help her political ambitions soar if she doesn't align herself with the E.R.A. Before the "Get Out the Vote" appearance, Mackenzie learns that Christine has publicly declared that she won't back the E.R.A. Meanwhile, Rebecca finally gets to meets her mystery I.M. buddy, a staffer for Nathan. Then, Mackenzie and Nathan appear together on stage, with Nathan talking about why he should be president and Mackenzie noting that the Illinois General Assembly has just ratified the E.R.A. Afterward, Jim informs Mackenzie that Dickie may have swayed Christine. Mackenzie confronts Dickie, who claims that he is simply protecting her from herself. Mackenzie claims that she is going to campaign for reelection by simply "doing her job." She then fires Dickie, who quickly goes over to Nathan's camp. Kelly is taken aback when Jeremy introduces her to his new wife. Jim then tells Mackenzie that he's mulled her offer and would like to be her vice president. Finally, Mackenzie navigates through a huge crowd assembled in support of her E.R.A. speech. Includes commercials.
